August 2023 Flooding - Joint Preliminary Damage Assessment

August 2023 Flood Damage Update:

On September 19, between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm, federal, state, county, and local officials will be canvassing neighborhoods in Chesterfield Township and the City of New Baltimore to assess the flooding damage caused by severe storms and torrential rains on August 23 and 24. As part of the assessment process, assessment teams will be knocking on doors and talking to residents in the most heavily impacted areas.

These assessments, part of FEMA's Joint Preliminary Damage Assessment Program, are being conducted in response to Governor Gretchen Whitmer declaring a State of Emergency for Chesterfield and New Baltimore at the request of County Executive Mark Hackel, New Baltimore Mayor Tom Semaan, and Chesterfield Township Supervisor Brad Kersten. They will help illustrate the extent of uninsured losses caused by the storms, and the information gathered could potentially be used to determine whether residents of the areas under the state of emergency might qualify for aid under FEMA's Individual Assistance Program.

Although federal aid is not approved or imminent, this is an important step toward helping state and FEMA officials understand how our communities were impacted.
